I do believe, however, that writing in and of itself is an addiction. It is for me. Once the muse grabs me by the nose and won't let go, it's like I have no other choice. I have a headline on my blog, a quote from T.C. Boyle: 'Writing is a habit, an addiction, as powerful and overmastering an urge as putting a bottle to your lips or a spike in your arm.' I believe that. It's certainly true for me. I don't drink to excess, and I don't use drugs - but I did in my younger days.
